OAR FM is one of 12 Community Access Media Alliance (CAMA) stations in Aotearoa New Zealand. Our non-profit station performs a unique role as an essential community service whose overarching goal is to serve local communities and cultures overlooked by mainstream media. By prioritising the creation of podcasts and radio shows by, for and about women, youth, children, Māori, Pacific communities, other ethnic communities, LBGTQI+ individuals and groups, people with disabilities, the elderly and people from a range of religious and ethical beliefs, the station provides a voice for the underrepresented.

Our range of podcasts and radio shows is very broad and always changing. From celebrations of culture and language to specialised music shows and programmes about history, science, health, art, literature, business, financial literacy and more, diversity is the key. Our Youth Zone is a vibrant mix of content created by younger presenters, while our Connecting Cultures Zone features the many voices of our region’s ethnic communities.

If you or your organisation have an idea for a podcast or radio programme, we’re here to help you make it happen. It’s a great way of sharing your interests, your culture, your music and your conversations about the issues of the day with the wider community – and it’s a lot of fun! We will meet with you to discuss your idea and decide if it’s a good fit for our platforms. We can then make a plan, which includes the technical training you’ll need and tips on how to make your podcast or show the best it can be.

A contribution toward podcasting and airtime costs will usually be required. However, the cost is kept low through the support we receive from New Zealand On Air, so creating and sharing content with OAR represents great value as a communication medium. In some cases, the station is able to fully fund specific projects through additional grants.

We will always discuss the best funding options with you, which vary depending on the type of podcast or radio show you are making.

Some people are able to find a sponsor to assist with the costs of their podcast or radio show (and there are some great benefits for sponsors!)

We are very proud of our digital reach. Measurable online audiences can be expected to consume around 300,000 podcasts of OAR FM content annually.

As a non-commercial, non-profit station, OAR FM does not participate in the New Zealand Commercial Radio Survey. For this reason, we are unable to estimate broadcast listenership numbers on 105.4FM and 1575AM. Also, due to the special nature of our podcasts and radio shows, much of our content is tailored for specific audiences, so “who is listening?” can be more important than simply “how many are listening?” Through on-air promotion, Social Media, websites, mailing lists and e-newsletters, the station and our podcast/radio show hosts find many ways to reach audiences who value their content.

Yes.  If you are looking for an effective, affordable way to connect with Ōtepoti Dunedin communities, OAR FM community advertising will expand your reach to a broad grassroots listenership.  And unlike the commercial radio environment, your advertising has more cut-though, as you are not competing with as many advertisers for the attention of listeners.

Donate to OAR FM

Making a donation, of any amount, is hugely helpful. We are grateful for the support our non-profit Access Media station receives from NZ On Air and our other funders, but this does not cover the full costs of airtime, volunteer training or the maintenance of our Ōtepoti Dunedin studios. Every dollar you donate helps give Ōtepoti Dunedin people a voice in the media – making podcasts and radio shows by, for and about our diverse communities.

Sponsor a Show

Individuals, organisations and businesses can also sponsor OAR FM podcasts and radio shows. Sponsorship enables us to extend podcasting and broadcasting opportunities to content-creators who might not otherwise be able to afford it. This in turn allows the station and its sponsors to reach the widest possible audience. It’s a great way of building relationships with community groups, and recognition of your business’s commitment to the local market.
